First off: new animation! A panther walk cycle.

Secondly: Our participation sucks! I was considering a weekly digest to remind people to visit but today I found a couple of sites that are doing exactly what this blog is intended to do; get a broad range of opinions. (the sweatbox forum is specifically for work in progress) (the personal work forum)

The point of this blog was to get a narrow range of opinions from people we know and trust but so far it hasn't worked so well. So maybe it's better to share our work on Facebook or the Facebook group, since most of us are friends there anyway.

But I also think it'd be a good thing for us to get involved in these two, existing communities, even though the vast majority of members seem to be AM grads. You guys seem to breed like rabbits :P But there are some working professionals involved as well, at least on the 11second club.

So we'll see if this blog survives but with less than five people using it on a regular basis, I'm not seeing much use in continuing it unless I can put a ton of effort into encouraging all 40+ of our class to actually participate.

Thoughts? Opinions? Silence?

  1. First of all, your panther walk cycle looks very good. There are many good comments on the you animator site so im not going to repeat those. I think that the "shoulder" of the right front leg moves too automatic. What I see is the weight is not pushing it enough, so maybe if you start to push shoulder up few frames earlier, it might work.

Secondly this blog is almost dead. its always a possible to post work to the 11 second club but I thought that this blog could be good place to share our work and get comments from the people we allready know.
BTW. are all student from the glass aware that this blog exists?

Hopefully this blog doesn't fall to the silence.

  2. Thanks Teemu. I emailed everyone from the class when it was first created and only heard back from 10-12 people. I guess some of that enthusiasm people had decreased a bit when they went back to real life.

I'll take a look at that shoulder blade.

  3. I think we could discuss something easier to comment and give feedback...

From the one receiving feedback point of view, it's really hard to digest the comments and keep them coming. Somehow it's a little discouraging to give more comments when you don't know how the last one you gave was taken.

also good feedback takes time to give, so maybe if we had a queue system, or something that makes sure no feedback gets repeated, we could vote on how useful they were, and something to get straight to the point and avoid the emotional side of giving feedback to a friend.

Then we could always have space for comments when we really need to say something.

I will think on a way to make this happen. I think youtube made a good job on rating comments and making sure you dont repeat one, see which one is more popular, etc. This way the animator could even have the priorities set automatically, and when he is done with it, he can comment on the comment itself saying something like "DONE." (and all users could rate his DONE comment to make sure its working already.

  4. Well, I would hate to see the blog go away, I thought it was an excellent idea; unfortunately, I dont do much animation; Initially I thought I would contribute my drawings which I post in my blog almost on a daily basis, but since this is an animation blog I thought I might bore you....
If you guys dont mind, I can post my drawings, which are aimed at animation of course; that way it's not strictly animation tests, but more of a Gobelins summer2010 kind of blog..
My only other comment, is that we should be tough on each other, and leave the "it's looking great" only when it really is; I know we're all artists and sensible, but I love when I get tough comments; it's hard at first, but then you always gain something from them...

  5. I'd love to get more involved in this blog soon as i have a job sorted.

How in the heckins did you get a frame by frameable quicktime video on Youanimator?
